Some of us may think a birthday is an important day, while the rest of us may think it is just an ordinary day that no need to be celebrated. It's actually our right to define the meaning of birthday depends on what we believe.
This is the list that a birthday means for me, from year to year.
1. Birthday: A day when I receive a present
Birthday cake, balloon, candle, present, joyful song, warm hugs, family, friends, and new wishes. Those are what I'm waiting for on my birthday.
That was my thought when I was a kid. I thought a birthday was really a special day. No sorrow, just happiness. There is no other emotion but happiness. I was happy because I would have several presents only for myself.
2. Birthday: A day when our time is decreasing
When I was in Junior High School, there were some religious events that talked about the real meaning of birthday depends on our death time. Basically, there is a limited time of our lives in this world. We will face death, whether we are ready or not, happy or not. If God had decided that we will only live for 50 years, it means year after year, all of our birthdays bring us to the end of our journey. We also are required to think about what we've done last year, what should be changed, and something like that.
It sounds like a birthday is a day when we take a deep contemplation about life and death.
3. Birthday: A day we should share with our parents
I never realized this thing until my friend told me his feeling. He was very upset when he couldn't celebrate his birthday with his family. For me, it wasn't a big deal. Then, he said something that I will always remember, "Birthday is not just about me. It's not only a celebration of myself, but also my mom's." I felt like being struck by lightning. What he said was true, how could I never think about it?
For us, a birthday has a huge meaning that we have done such a great job last year and we want to celebrate our first time being born in this world. Meanwhile, for or our parents, our birthdays it's the day when they finally got the title 'parents', when our mom fought tooth and nail to give birth to us, when our dad didn't stop praying.
I really love this thought. I'm wondering there is a child running to her home on her birthday and giving a tight hug to her parents, then they will say thank you to each of them of this special day. This imagination touches me.
Now, I also celebrate my birthday as a day when I most THANK to MYSELF for being very strong in last year. It's the day when I should appreciate my work more than the usual day.
Thank you my dear myself, and happy birthday!
